Workplace Fads that are Ruining Corporate Nutrition Programs
Corporate nutrition is simply a reference to programs and people that attempt to help improve the nutritional weight and wellness of employees at all kinds of companies. This often includes corporate nutrition programs that are created by a nutritional consultant to help influence the healthy habits of employees.
These corporate nutrition pushes may be brought in by an employer or by the employees themselves; but oftentimes you’ll see them become a friendly competition that includes winning some kind of prize.
Unfortunately we are starting to see a trend of other workplace fads that get in the way of and compete with these health and wellness attempts.
Workplace Fads that are Ruining Corporate Nutrition Efforts
1. Cereal Bars
Many modern businesses have implemented a cereal or breakfast bar that is a free for all for employees to eat from whenever they please. These bars typically contain high sugar foods such as:
- Sugary cereals
- Fruit juices
The unfortunate truth is that even though these breakfast bars are increasing in popularity, they are simply not the healthy breakfast choices that a corporate nutrition consultant would suggest.
2. TGIF Drinks
We all get excited that it is Friday and look forward to our weekend free of work. Many workplaces have started a tradition of getting post-work drinks together every friday.
Some businesses even have bars at their place of business and allow employees to drink as they please on certain days of the week.
Regardless of the circumstance, this new habit of drinking together every week simply brings in unnecessary sugars that are not in line with a corporate nutrition program.
3. Unhealthy Snacks
Another enticing, albeit unhealthy trend in businesses are the abundance of unhealthy snacks available and easily accessible to employees. These snacks are purchased regularly and readily available to anyone that wants them at any time of the day, with no limit.
All too often these snacks do not include healthy options, but instead include items such as:
- Crackers & chips
Now don’t get us wrong! Several businesses are also providing excellent health measures and opportunities for employees to set and exceed health and wellness goals. These fads are merely a reminder that we need to be aware of what we are exposed to and exposing others to. But remember, even if you work somewhere that adheres to and provides these “perks” to their employees, you can set and achieve personal health and wellness goals regardless.
